Your report has a new stakeholder, and it doesn’t blink

Add AI to the list of audiences to consider when producing your next sustainability report.

Sustainability reporting has never been a single-audience exercise. The same report lands on the desk of an ESG rater building a scorecard, an investor weighing risk, a regulator checking for compliance gaps, a procurement officer running a supplier assessment and a prospective employee deciding whether your values match theirs. The report, the hub, the data appendix, the framework disclosures — the whole suite exists because different audiences need different entry points into the same underlying story.

But how these assets are read has changed.

CRI Senior Strategist Liz Rogers has done a deep dive into how AI readers are changing the stakes in sustainability reporting and shares some questions to ask to help you manage this new reporting reality. Read Liz’s full post here.

Can engaging communication and technical disclosure co‑exist?
This report says, “Yes.”

We’re excited to share a recently published report by NRG Energy, a leading provider of power generation, natural gas and smart energy solutions. NRG’s objectives for its 2025 Sustainability Report were two-fold: The Company wanted to tell the story of how it is helping to increase energy reliability, resiliency and affordability in its markets and also ensure that investors and other technical audiences could locate straightforward disclosures about various topics easily.

CRI helped the NRG team reimagine their report in a format that provided the best of both worlds. A report “cover story” breaks down NRG’s role and contributions to today’s energy landscape through a contextual narrative. Then, the second part of the report provides a directory of sustainability topics organized alphabetically for stakeholders who are looking for detailed disclosures in specific areas. The two parts of the report are visually distinguished. Photography and robust infographics are spread across the cover story, while the topic index features a more straightforward, no-nonsense design.
